A Night Visible to the Naked Eye

Nayeon Yang is an interdisciplinary artist based in Chicago and S. Korea. She moved to the US from S. Korea in 2006. Experiencing the implied status of a ‘foreigner’ now in both countries, she explores the politics of ‘foreign’ and ‘presence’ in a global society through her projects.

Yang has exhibited at different venues including Chicago Artists Coalition, Wedge Projects, Roots and Culture, Co-Prosperity Sphere, Defibrillator Performance Art Gallery, 849 Gallery at the Kentucky College of Art and Design, Roy G. Biv Gallery, Suchang Youth Mansion, and Mythtake Museum. She received an MFA in Sculpture from the Ohio State University and a BFA from School of the Art Institute of Chicago and is an alumna of residencies such as High Concept Labs, Birdsell Project, ACRE, Wassaic Project, and others.

이민자로서의 경험과 리서치를 바탕으로, 양나연 작가는 현대 글로벌 사회에서의 한 사람의 존재가 어떻게 자의적 타의적 분류 혹은 분리가 이루어지는지, 또한 그 의미는 무엇인지 작업을 통해 고찰해간다.

양 작가는 장소 특정 인스톨레이션, 비디오, 퍼포먼스, 사진, 건축물 등의 다양한 매체를 어우르며, 필연적이며 답습되는 주체와 객체의 관계를 탐구한다. 양 작가는 수창청춘맨숀 (대구), 미스테이크 뮤지엄 (청평), 시카(김포), 문과방 (대전), 시카고 예술 연합, 버디-시카고 컬쳐럴 센터, 웻지 프로젝트, 하이 컨셉 랩-마나, 루츠 앤 컬쳐, 코-스페리티 스피어, 디피브레이터 (시카고, 미국), 더 벌드셀 프로젝트 (사우스 밴드, 인디애나), 로이 지 비브 갤러리, 얼반 아트 스페이스 (컬럼버스, 미국) 849 캔터키 예술학교 갤러리 (루이스빌, 미국), 퍼포먼스 아트 베르겐 (베르겐, 노르웨이) 벙커 프로젝트 (피츠버그, 미국) 켄터키 주립대 미술관 (렉싱턴, 미국), 라티튜트 53 (에드몬톤, 캐나다)등의 다양한 공간에서 작업을 선보였다. 최근 참여 레지던시로는 해치-시카고 예술 연합, 웻지 프로젝트, 하이 컨셉 랩, 에이커 (시카고, 미국), 그리고 벌드셀 프로젝트 (사우스 밴드, 인디애나) 등이 있다.
